MOVING BEYOND "RAGS TO RICHES"

Nicholas White, acct. 7814

Additional Information on Nicholas White:

bartender > "wealthy liquor dealer"

In 1872, after a dispute, Nicholas White shot a man, was charged with 1st degree murder, pleaded guilty to 3rd degree manslaughter and was sentenced to 2 years at Sing Sing.  In 1876, was arrested for selling liquor on Sunday.  Earlier, in 1861, had sued police for false imprisonment (won suit) in incident where his employee was arrested, apparently for selling liquor on Sunday.

Many articles, widely published, on the murder, but did not find obit or any indication if/when he served the sentence.  1876 blurb shows he was alive and in business then.  He died before 1883 (widow's death rec).  Nicholas was not with his family in 1880, but his wife is listed as married (this is what caused me to look for him--that and an address, 53 Lewis St.).
