THE LOCAL FIELD

What is Going on in and About Fair Greencastle

…John Forhan returned this morning from a World’s fair visit…

…A sensational rumor was current last night that John Forhan, of south Greencastle, had been shot in Chicago.  As John turned up at his place of business this morning all right, the rumor was a canard.  John got home from the fair without any trouble.

John Foran died at his home on the Cloverdale road in the southern edge of the city on Sunday, after a long illness of heart trouble.  The burial occurred on Monday.  On Monday evening his son, Timothy Foran, aged about twenty-five years, died.  For several years the latter had been afflicted with great bodily illness.  The family has been particularly unfortunate as the last death makes four in the same family since September last, the mother and a son dying with that time.  The remains of young Mr. Foran were buried from St. Paul’s church yesterday morning.

A FATAL RUNAWAY

John Forhan Killed and John O’Connell Crippled

On Saturday afternoon a frightful accident happened, whereby one man was fatally injured and another suffered a double fracture of the leg.  John Forhan and John O’Connell were riding in a buggy; starting from the post office, as they turned south on Vine street the horse ran away with them; at the corner of Vine and Poplar streets the vehicle collided with a telephone pole and both men were thrown with great violence to the street.  Those who witnessed the accident ran to their assistance, and Drs. Smythe & Tucker and Lammers were summoned to render surgical aid.  Both men, after temporary relief had been given them, were placed in vehicles and taken to their homes.  On examination it was found that O’Connell’s right leg was fractured in two places—one fracture just above the knee and the other just below the hip joint.  Drs. Smythe & Tucker reduced the fractures and made him as comfortable as possible, but he will be confined to his bed for a long time, and his recovery will necessarily be slow.

Dr. Lammers gave Mr. Forhan attention.  He found the injury [sic] man unconscious, suffering from concussion of the brain and spine, and past the aid of mortal ken.  He gradually grew worse and passed peacefully away on Sunday morning between 7 and 8 o’clock.  Deceased was twenty-seven years of age, and leaves two sisters, with whom he made his home, to mourn his sad and untimely death, and the many friends tender them sincerest sympathy.  Death has been a frequent visitor in the Forhan family—‘tis not long since four members of the family died in a short space of time, and now one of the three remaining has been called to the other world.

Mr. Forhan’s funeral, which was very largely attended, took place from the family residence, on Tuesday morning, Father McLaughlin conducting the services.
